The Bureau of Facility Standards is pleased to announce a very special educational opportunity for Long Term Care Facility Administrators, Directors of Nursing, Quality Improvement/Risk Managers. This program is a continuing and cooperative effort to assist Long Term Care facilities in addressing critical issues impacting residents' care and well-being. We are pleased to have Ms. Sue Ann Guildermann, Empira Inc., Eden Prairie, Minnesota, as the guest presenter for this program.

The cost of a resident fall in a skilled nursing facility on average is between $9,100 and $13,500, according to the CDC. The Empira fall prevention program is a combination of nationally recognized evidence-based, fall-prevention practices and practical applications from numerous research studies. At the completion of their three-year program, Empira nursing facilities have collectively achieved a twenty to thirty percent (20% - 30%) reduction in the prevalence of resident falls. These findings, coupled with a significant reduction in the number of repeated falls, makes this presentation one that you will want to attend.

This in-depth session will cover the implementation of a comprehensive fall prevention and reduction program and the elements below:

  • Gain insights from lessons learned to the challenges and barriers to implementing a program that tests the current practices for fall prevention within the aging services provider community.
  • Recognize the importance of starting your own program with the key component of an investigation into the root cause(s) analysis of a fall.
  • Examine effective and ineffective fall prevention strategies and interventions.
  • Understand the importance of the development of new responsibilities for all care center departments.
  • Create a comprehensive educational program.
  • Become familiar with an auditing system to insure compliance and redundancy.
  • Take home information, tools, assessments, forms, and resources designed to help you implement a successful fall prevention and reduction program.
