Idaho Training Program for Licensed Nurses in Assisted Living

This training program was developed to help the licensed nurse who works in an assisted living facility to prepare for this area of practice. It is and has been recognized by personnel in Idaho’s State Department of Health and Welfare, Idaho Board of Nursing, administrators of assisted living facilities, members of the Idaho Health Care Association-Idaho Center for Assisted Living and members of the Idaho Nurses Association of Assisted Living that many nurses do not know the role and responsibilities of the licensed nurse working in assisted living. This kind of preparation is not part of the nurse’s basic education. Many nurses are hired part-time and are expected to know what to do from day one. The purpose of this training program is to prepare the licensed nurse with the knowledge, skills and, desirable attitude to be successful in this vital and growing industry. Completion of the program will also provide some help to the licensed nurse who wishes to pass a national certification examination introduced in Module I.

Format of the Program: This program is comprised of five (5) modules written in a competency-based format. Competencies are learner-focused. This means they are written for the learner/participant to perform. Participants in the training program are able to self-assess their levels of competency and knowledge as they move through the modules. The five modules are the following: Module I: Orientation to the World of Assistive Living, Module II: Licensed Nurse Scope and Standards for Assisted Living, Module III: Managing Resident Care, Module IV: Reimbursements and Importance to the Plan of Care, Module V: Management and Leadership.

  • Grading is Pass or Fail. Failure to attend classes and to complete the assignments will cause a failing grade.
  • Record of Training: When the participant completes a module, the instructor will sign the column that provides for the instructor’s signature. The record of training is the participant’s responsibility. When all modules are completed and signed, the certificate of completion will be awarded. The record should be kept in a safe place but readily available for the instructor to sign.
  • Certificate Of Completion: Participants who complete the program will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the Idaho Health Care Association-Idaho Center for Assisted Living.
  • Classroom training takes place over 2.5 days at the annual convention.
